I'm going to learn how to skateboard. All I know is this: get a long board with larger wheels. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to spend a lot of money- would like to get the skateboard from Target or somewhere. Watch out. I'll be going pro in a few years.

National Adoption Day

Today is National Adoption Day. I was so excited to hear about how thousands of children in Foster Care are having their adoption finalized today. How incredible that they are being “born” into a new life with a family that loves them… today! Christian talk radio has been talking a lot about orphans this week. It has been impressed upon me just how much we are called, as Christians, to step up to the plate and help these little ones. There are 143 MILLION orphaned children in the world today. There are hundreds of thousands in the USA in Foster Care who are waiting to be adopted and loved, for once, by a mommy and daddy. Many of these kids will just grow up in Foster homes until they are 18 years old- then they go out into the world on their own. Coming from a family that was a Foster Home to so many little girls, this hits home and breaks my heart. What greater impact for Christ than to bring a child into your home and share His love with them!

I have heard it said that perhaps our country will not see true turn-around in the abortion laws until our Christian population learns to step up and takes care of the fatherless that we currently have- not to mention those that would be our responsibility if we are successful in outlawing abortions. I am going to do a better job helping the helpless.

This is my sister Joanna. She is one of the most fun people that I know- and pretty darn funny. She is also in Afghanistan and a pretty darn good officer. Please pray for our people in combat zones- especially the Christians. It is easy to feel isolated, alone and left with no Christian encouragement or accountability. So, when you read this and think about it- please pray. What an opportunity we have to touch a land that has not felt the feet of this many Christians- maybe ever!

OK, so this one is deeper than most. I promise not to do this very often.
We had a great sermon at church on Sunday. It wasn't totally focused on scripture, but still made a powerful point. The funny thing is that the point it made led to me thinking about other stuff and ultimately "taking home" something different than what was said. I felt like a horse penned up in the starting gates though. I know there is a race ahead of me- to be a missionary, but not sure when God will shoot the starting gun to signal when to go. I have a long way to go to be totally ready and equipped to do this, but I love that the fire and motivation is still so raw and powerful. I hope I can hold onto this feeling for a long time. To sum it up, I will borrow a quote from the sermon:
C.T. Studd said, "Some wish to live within chime of church or chapel bell. I want to run a rescue-shop within a yard of hell."

A Fish Named Shaquanda

Listen, my family has a fascination with naming animals strange names. It has come to be almost a competition to figure out the most ridiculous names for animals whenever a new one comes into the family.

Examples:
Jean got a guinea pig for her 21st birthday (a whole separate issue that needs to be addressed, I know) and named him Gary.
We have had cats named Richard, Harry and Dirt.
Jean's fish all had ghetto names like Shaquanda (can't remember the others).
My dog is named Jimmy. The other is Holly, but that one isn't as funny.

I feel like we haven't struck gold yet, though. There has to be a ridiculous name out there that just would make everyone laugh when they met your dog/cat/lizzard. Any suggestions?
